Buying Stocks to different companies.?
I work for Wal-Mart and they do offer a stock plan for us. and it goes through computershare but my question is though i know i can manage my Walmart stocks through there, what if i want to get stocks through other companies IE Sony. Can i buy some through computershare or will i have to go to a broker then buy it there then register it through computershare? cause i know with wamart on it we can buy sell stock on computershare but it is only saying for walmart.
No, computershare is a stock by stock deal…
That is, you have an account for Wal-Mart and only Wal-mart.
There are a number of stocks (usually called DRP or DRIP stocks) that allow you to buy shares of their company directly from them. They also use companies like Computershare to handle these types of programs.
So, if you decided that you wanted to own ExxonMobil through their DRIP program you would end up with another Computershare account for ExxonMobil as well as Wal-Mart. However, you cannot generally use your Wal-Mart plan account to acquire shares of ExxonMobil.
Sony does have a DRIP program, but it is run by JP Morgan…see link below.
(Disclosure: I own ExxonMobil and JP Morgan in my long term and retirement portfolios. I own Wal-Mart in my speculative portfolio)
